Module 10: Intermolecular Forces

Background

So far this semester, we examined chemical compounds in terms of their composition, formula, and predicted arrangement of atoms in space. We will now examine how molecules interact with each other, and how these interactions lead to a compound’s physical properties.

Learning Objectives for Intermolecular Forces

  1. Observe that intermolecular forces exist.
  2. Distinguish between intra- and intermolecular forces.
  3. Analyze a molecular structure to determine the appropriate intermolecular forces (eg. Ionic, Ion – Dipole, Dipole – Dipole, Hydrogen Bonding, Dipole − Induced Dipole, London Forces)
  4.  Recognize the special role of H-bonds in water
  5. Connect trends in physical properties with relative strength of intermolecular forces.
    • Predict relative melting or boiling points of similar compounds
    • Relate vapor pressure and normal boiling point to strength of intermolecular forces.
    • Predict solubility with the guidance that “like dissolves like”.
    • Compare relative surface tension and viscosity of two similar compounds.
    • Use adhesive and cohesive forces to explain capillary forces.

Why is this content important?

In the news:  Ozone (O3) occurs naturally in our atmosphere, and it has several important roles in our environment. Ozone levels can be affected by human activity. Check out this article from the Environmental Protection Agency about the health effects of ozone.
