The climate of the Solovki archipelago is determined by its geographical position – just 150 km south of the Arctic circle. The average temperature in July is +12 C., in January -12 C., although it can get as cold as -30 C.		Approximately 60% of the territory of the islands is covered by Northern taiga with lots of fir trees and pines. There are also birches and mountain ashes. The Solovki islands include more than 516 large and small lakes, often connected by picturesque canals. Numerous marshes are an excellent habitat for huge northern mosquitoes and midges.
