Part 6: Fall 2017 Labs

85 Canvas and Assessment with Michael Maguire — 10.27.2017

In the October 27, 2017 Active Teaching Lab, Michael Maguire Michael Maguireshared how to simplify grading scheme(s) in Canvas. Participants learned strategies to help move the needle toward more authentic and accurate assessment with an equitable grading system that aligns with the GPA scale. Attendees came equipped with laptops and a Sandbox course to work with grading schemes as an instructor and to get hands-on experience with Canvas tools as a student.

Takeaways

Using a GPA-based grading scale (out of 4.0) in Canvas can help make grading:

  • easier for the instructor and student to manage
  • more equitable
  • more closely aligned with transcripts
  • supportive and reflective of authentic assessment practices.
