Part 11 – Spring 2020 Labs

211 Tips for Managing Canvas Files – 01.24.2020

On January 24, 2020, participants in the Active Teaching Lab discussed efficient practices for managing, sharing and archiving files in Canvas. Participants shared embed techniques, efficient naming conventions, and suggestions for how best to anticipate hurdles in student way finding and navigation.

Takeaways

  • Establish clear naming conventions. For each document, Page, Quiz, and Module, be sure to have clear titles (perhaps even with dates) to facilitate access for students and for the next time you teach the course.
  • Use Pages to guide students through their assignments and tasks with clear instructions, context for reading assignments, clearly labeled links to reading assignments, and embedded video content to keep students on the right page.
  • Remember: 1GB storage for your Canvas page! Embed documents to streamline access, organization, and updating of your course. Learn more here about the Canvas file storage quota.

The Active Teaching Lab is a Faculty Engagement program with sessions held on Thursdays from 1:00-2:00pm and Fridays from 8:30-9:45am in the Middleton Building (1305 Linden Dr.), room 120. Check out upcoming Labs or read the recaps from past Labs. We build interdisciplinary conversations that are more emergent than a presenter and more dynamic than a panel — a conversation with colleagues sharing challenges, solutions, and experiments on topics selected by a variety of stakeholders.
