107 Kahoot and Padlet with Chris Dakes – 03.02.2018

In the March 2, 2018 Active Teaching Lab, Chris Dakes shared how he uses polling tools like Kahoot.it and Padlet to engage students in active learning in the classroom. In-class polling tools are fun, free, easy to use, and can quickly solicit input and gauge understanding from students. Try it for yourself with the activity sheet from the session.

  • Both Kahoot and Padlet are free (for basic use) and easily accessible for students and instructors.
  • Both tools can be used for simple, formative feedback and increased student engagement.
  • Many K-12 classrooms currently use Kahoot, so there’s a danger of it looking too childish (especially for recent K-12 students). Students who have been (over)exposed to Kahoot in the past may already have negative attitudes about it, thus it’s especially important to identify a specific purpose and intent when bringing it to a higher ed classroom.

Similar to the Active Teaching Labs, Active Teaching Exchanges feature instructors sharing their teaching experiences with tools and techniques, but provide more time for discussion without the hands-on investigation time.
