Part 11 – Spring 2020 Labs
On February 27, 2020, participants in the Active Teaching Lab explored the Peer Review tool in Canvas from the perspectives of both instructor and student. Participants considered the use of the tool in their own course design and shared tips, suggestions, and hesitations about how to implement Peer Review in their courses.
- Train students on expectations and processes for peer review. Provide examples of high-, medium- and low-quality comments and walk through the peer-review process together before assigning individual reviews. Show students how to leave (and check) feedback in the Canvas DocViewer and how to use rubrics to focus attention on feedback, not logistics.
- Use rubrics for more robust, targeted student feedback. Rubrics also provide practice for students to identify desired (and undesired) components in their own work.
- Make real-world benefits of peer feedback skills salient — Encourage students to reflect on why the perspectives of their peers is an important component of their academic and professional experiences. Peer-to-peer learning

The Active Teaching Lab is a Faculty Engagement program with sessions held on Thursdays from 1:00-2:00pm and Fridays from 8:30-9:45am in the Middleton Building (1305 Linden Dr.), room 120.
