Part 10: Fall 2019 Labs
On October 11, 2019 participants of the Active Teaching Lab gathered to reflect again on students’ technology choices. The focus was on which applications and programs students choose to supplement their learning, as well as collaborate with their peers.
- Ask your students! Create on-going discussions [Canvas, Piazza] to share effective learning technology ideas/resources with the entire class.
- Share research on effective learning. Get students thinking about how their learning practices align (or don’t) with research. Note that research generally indicates trends, and that students’ specific technology choices might work for them (but perhaps they think about it and try new things). A good place to start is with What Works; What Doesn’t — a meta-analysis of learning research.
- Do your due diligence with working with new technologies in your class. Test the apps/software prior to the start of the semester and provide up-to-date support resources for students when trouble arises.

The Active Teaching Lab is a Faculty Engagement program with sessions held on Wednesdays from 1:00-2:00pm and Fridays from 8:30-9:45am in the Middleton Building (1305 Linden Dr.), room 120. We build interdisciplinary conversations that are more emergent than a presenter and more dynamic than a panel — a conversation with colleagues sharing challenges, solutions, and experiments on topics selected by a variety of stakeholders.
