Part 11 – Spring 2020 Labs
215 Learning Analytics – 02.13.2020
On February 13, 2020, participants in the Active Teaching Lab met to discuss current Learning Analytics (LA) initiatives, definitions, and practices of collecting data about student learning.
Takeaways
- Learning Analytics (LA) “is the undertaking of activities that generate actionable data from the learning environment intended to improve student outcomes by informing structure, content, delivery or support of the learning environment” — as contextually defined for UW-Madison by the Learning Analytics Roadmap Committee.
- LA is a muddy subject with many moving parts in a changing landscape. Join the LA email list to stay up to data by sending an email to: join-uwmadisonlearninganalytics@lists.wisc.edu
- In March 2020, existing “Canvas Analytics” will be replaced with “New Analytics.” The new interface offers more opportunity to visualize student data. Start here for New Analytics in Canvas.

The Active Teaching Lab is a Faculty Engagement program with sessions held on Thursdays from 1:00-2:00pm and Fridays from 8:30-9:45am in the Middleton Building (1305 Linden Dr.), room 120. Check out upcoming Labs or read the recaps from past Labs. We build interdisciplinary conversations that are more emergent than a presenter and more dynamic than a panel — a conversation with colleagues sharing challenges, solutions, and experiments on topics selected by a variety of stakeholders.
Sign up for regular Lab announcements by sending an email to join-activeteaching@lists.wisc.edu.
