On October 2, 2019, participants in the Active Teaching Lab discussed students’ technology choices. The discussion focused on which apps, programs, and tools students use outside of class. Concerns for academic misconduct were also shared.

- Install the Canvas Mobile app, and see what your course looks like to your students.
- Use tech to facilitate prep and research outside of class, then shift the focus to in-class processes that naturally lend themselves to group collaboration (e.g. brainstorming, problem solving, decision making).
- Establish expectations for technology use and communicate a process for troubleshooting and solving problems ahead of time. Involve students in arriving at such a process, and provide a line of intra-class communication so that students can teach each other rather than relying solely on the instructor for help.
- Use Google Docs as a virtual “chalkboard” in the classroom that can be shared across platforms and devices. Engaging students enhances peer-to-peer learning and promotes participation.

The Active Teaching Lab is a Faculty Engagement program with sessions held on Wednesdays from 1:00-2:00pm and Fridays from 8:30-9:45am in the Middleton Building (1305 Linden Dr.), room 120.
