30 Msamiati

  1. Kupakana (v./verbal noun) – be adjacent/border/next to. Shule ya Rosary ilijulikana kwa kupakana na barabara.
  2. Mapango (pango (sing.) – JI/MA) – caves. Fisi walikuwa wakilala kwenye mapango yaliyokuwa milimani.
  3. Fisi (fisi -M/WA) – hyena/hyenas. See 2. above.
  4. Nyororo (adj. Whose root is -ororo) – soft (voice/skin, etc). NYORORO is used with N/N nouns like SAUTI, NGOZI, etc. Wasichana walikuwa na sauti nyororo. Sauti nyororonyororo za wasichana zilisikika.
  5. Mdahalo (midahalo – M/MI) – debate. Kulikuwa na midahalo mingi shuleni.
  6. Adimika (v.) – be rare/scarce. Wasichana waliadimika maana kulikuwa na shule moja ya wasichana na shule tano za wavulana.
  7. Mabikira (bikira – M/WA) – virgins. Masista (sisters-nuns) walipaswa kuwa mabikira.
  8. Mbwa mwitu (singular and plural- M/WA) – wild dog(s) which are dangerous when hunting prey. The writer likens the boys from the boys’ schools to wild dogs since they treated the girls as prey. Mwandishi aliwaona wanafunzi wa kiume kama mbwa mwitu.
  9. Kufa maji (phrasal verb) – drown. Afisa mmoja alidai Rosa alikuwa amekufa maji ili apate nafasi ya Rosa shuleni.
  10. taabu/tabu (n. – N/N) – problem/s. Rosa aliwaandikia wazazi wake barua kuwaeleza taabu aliyopata safarini.
  11. Kawia – – (v.) – delay. Rosa hakukawia kupata rafiki shuleni ambaye aliitwa Thereza.
  12. Maneno makali (n. + adj.) – harsh words. Rosa aliwajibu wavulana waliomsemesha kwa maneno makali.
  13. Kukatisha tamaa (phrasal verb) – make someone give up. Kukata tamaa – give up. Rosa aliwakatisha tamaa vijana waliomsemesha alipotumia maneno makali.
  14. Mwenzio sijiwezi (clause). Mwenzio – mwenzi wako – your companion. Sijiwezi – I am unable to do something – it could be out of sickness/fatigue/old age/being too much into (or out of) something such as love. In this context, Rosa is declaring she’s unable to involve herself in love relationships.
  15. Hudhuria (v.) – attend/be present. Rosa hakuhudhuria dansi hata siku moja.
  16. Gombania (v.) – quarrel over something. Wasichana walizoea kugombania wavulana.
  17. Hamu (n. – N/N) – desire/craving. Regina alimngojea bintiye kwa hamu.
  18. Suka (v.) – plait/weave/concoct. Regina alikuwa akisuka mkeka.
  19. Mkeka (n – M/MI) – mat. See 18. above.
  20. Chonga (v.) – sharpen/whet/carve/whittle – Zakaria alikuwa akichonga (whittle) mpini wa jembe kwa tezo.

  23. Shurutisha (v.) – force/compel. Sperantia alikuwa akimshurutisha Flora kumtengenezea mwanawe wa bandia.
  24. Sabahi (v.) – greet in the morning (asubuhi). Vijana walimsabahi Zakaria.
  25. Mshenzi (n. – M/WA) – savage/barbarian/person with filthy habits. Zakaria aliitwa mshenzi na vijana wale alipowafukuza. Zakaria and his filthy mouth also calls Regina the same.
  26. Oza (v.) – rot/go bad. The boys were being nasty after Zakaria sent them packing. Walimwambia ataoza na binti zake.
  27. Dhihaki (v.) – ridicule (v.) dhihaka – ridicule (n.)
  28. Mvunguni (n. locative) – under the bed
  29. Mafichoni (n. locative) – place where one hides
  30. Vimba (v.) – swell. Macho ya Sperantia yalivimba baada ya kuvamiwa na manyigu.
  31. Manyigu (n.)  Nyigu – M/WA) – hornets. See 30. above.
  32. Vigelegele (n. kigelegele –  KI/VI) ululations. Bigeyo alipiga vigelegele alipozaliwa Emanuel.
  33. -pa pongezi (phr. v.) – congratulate. Zakaria alimpa pongezi (alimpongeza) mke wake alipojifungua kitoto cha kiume.
  34. Guna (v.) – grunt/mutter. Zakaria aliguna tu kwa vile hakutaka kumjibu Regina.
  35. Chandarua/chandalua (n. KI/VI) – mosquito net/tarpaulin. Regina alimwambia Zakaria amletee chandalua.
