Talking about Weather in Yoruba

Objective: To practice speaking and listening skills in Yoruba while discussing weather conditions.

Instructions:
1. Divide the participants into pairs or small groups. If you are working individually, you can simulate conversations with the help of a language mentor or a recording.

2. Provide a list of weather-related questions in Yoruba to initiate conversations.

Examples:
– Kini asọtẹlẹ oju-ọjọ́ sọ fún ọlá? (What does the weather forecast say for tomorrow?)
– Báwo ni oju-ọjọ́ ṣe rí lónìí (What is the weather like today?)
– Ṣe akoko oyẹ́ ti bẹ̀rẹ̀? (Has the harmattan season started yet)?
– Bawo ni awọn eniyan ti o wà ni ilú ṣe n murasilẹ fún igba òjò (How do people in the city prepare for the rainy season)?

3. Provide a vocabulary list or flashcards with weather-related terms in Yoruba. Examples:
– ẹ̀ẹ̀rùn/ọ̀gbẹlẹ̀ (dry season)
– àkókò/Igba òjò (period of rain)
– Mọ̀námọ́ná fẹ́/máa tan. (There is about to be a lightning.)
– Àrá san. (Thunder struck.)
– Òjò n ro gan-an (It is raining heavily)
– Agbàrá (òjò)/Ẹkún omi. (flood)
– Ìjí (storm)/ Ìjì-líle,ìjì-ńlá, ẹ̀fu̇ùfù lẹ̀lẹ̀ (big storm)/ Ìjì fẹ́ jà. (There is about to be a storm.)
– Òṣùmàrè ń hàn (There is a rainbow.)
– Atẹ́gùn ń fẹ́. (It is breezy.)
– Òtútù máa mú. (It will be cold.)
– Òòrùn ń ràn. (The sun is shining.)
– Ooru fẹ́/ń mú. [It is (getting) hot.]
– Ni ìgbà òjò,ewé máa ń hù, ohun ọ̀gbìn sì máa ń so. (In the rainy season, leaves grow, and plants yield fruits.)
– Ni ìgbà ẹ̀rùn, ewé máa ń gbẹ, ilè sì máa n gbona. (In the dry season, leaves get dry, and the ground is often hot.)

4. Encourage participants to engage in conversations and use the vocabulary they have learned while discussing the weather. They can describe the current weather conditions, talk about their favorite weather, or discuss how weather affects their daily activities.

5. The mentor provides feedback on pronunciation and usage of vocabulary.
