Correcting Common Word Usage Errors

Objective: The objective of this activity is to help learners identify and correct common word usage errors in the Yoruba language, enhancing their language skills and communication accuracy.

Instructions:

1. Presentation of Common Errors
Display the handouts with sentences that contain common word usage errors. For example:

Correct Yoruba Wrong Yoruba English Translation
ṣan ẹsẹ fọ ẹsẹ to wash one’s feet
bọ oju wẹ oju to have a wash
ṣan ẹran fọ ẹran to wash the meat
ré ekanna gé ekanna to one’s nails
gbé ẹmu rà ẹmu to buy palm wine
rò ẹfọ sè ẹfọ to cook vegetables
Ọba na waja. Ọba na ku. The king died.
Afin Ọba Ile Ọba The palace
Egungun sẹgi Egungun sọrọ The Egungun speaks

2. Discuss the errors in each sentence and explain the correct usage with the mentor.

3. The mentor makes a set of sentences containing word usage errors. The learner needs to identify the errors and discuss the correct forms. Encourage learners to use Yoruba-English dictionaries if needed.

4. The mentor can assign participants a set of sentences to correct on their own as homework. Encourage them to practice using the correct word forms and note any challenges they encounter.
