Let’s Go Shopping in Yoruba!

Objective: The goal of this activity is to help learners practice essential shopping phrases and vocabulary in a fun and interactive way.

Activity Steps:

1. Introduction to Shopping Phrases:
– Begin the activity by introducing some shopping phrases in Yoruba. Examples:
– “Sé mo lè ràn ọ́ lọ́wọ́?” (May I help you?)
-“Mo kàn ńwò.” (I am just looking.)
– “Kini iwọ̀n bàtà ẹsẹ̀ rẹ? (What’s your shoe size?)/”Kini iwọ̀n rẹ?” (What size are you?)
– “Se mo le wọ̀ ọ́ wò? (Could I try it on?)
– “Mo fẹ́ eyi.”(I like this one)/ “N kò fẹ́ ìyẹ́n.” (I don’t like that one.)
– Ó se dédé. (It fits.)
– Sé mo le ni ẹ̀dinwó? (Could I have a discount?)
– Mà á fẹ́ ra èyi. (I’d like to buy this.)
– Sé mo le fi kaadi/owó sán? (Can I pay in card/cash?)
– Ẹ jọ̀ọ́, se mo le gba irisiiti? (Caould I have a receipt, please?)
– Èyi ti fọ́. (It is broken.)
– Mo fẹ́ dá eyi pada. (I want to return this.)
– Sé gbogbo rẹ̀ ni? (Is that everything?)
– Njẹ́ o le wọn eyi bi? (Could you weigh this?)
– Máse fọwọ́ kàn! (Do not touch!)

2. Present pictures of common shopping items and their Yoruba names one by one. Encourage learners to repeat the words after the mentor gives pronunciation.

3. Role-Playing:
– Divide the learners into pairs and assign roles (shopkeeper and customer).
– Organize a simulated shopping experience where learners can apply their knowledge in a real-life setting.
– Set up different “shops” (fruit stand, clothing store, etc.) with the picture cards representing the items for sale.
– Each learner takes turns playing the role of the customer and the shopkeeper, using the Yoruba phrases they’ve learned to negotiate prices and make purchases.
– The mentor provides feedback and correct any mistakes to reinforce learning.
