Kinyarwanda

Getting to know you

This short lesson will help you practice getting to know someone in Kinyarwanda.

This is build upon the lessons by Omniglot and Harvard’s ELIAS. I suggest reading these sites before you begin. Also check out this video to hear greetings and replies pronounced by a native speaker: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZCuHpFhuaQ

Here is a quick reference for helpful phrases:

Muraho – Hello

Amakuru yawe – how are you?

Ni meza – I am good.

Urihe? – Where are you?

Ndi … – I am …

Witwa nde? – What is your name?

Nitwa … – My name is …

Ufite imyaka ingahe? – How old are you?

Mfite imyaka … – I am … years old

Now try it for yourself!

Next, watch the YouTube video again and pause after each phrase, repeat the phrase out loud, and think of how you would respond.
