Finding a Language Mentor Advice (Ajara Jagne)
Finding Your Language Mentor
- Find a mentor who suits your needs and learning style. More specifically, find a mentor who can work with your strengths and weaknesses.
- Do not be afraid to have multiple mentors if each mentor can help you achieve different goals more effectively, in case you do not find this in one mentor.
- Use your past resources and networks. If you have attended past language programs or have been in previous language departments, reach out to them to help guide your steps. Sometimes it is who you know who can best help you achieve certain goals. You never who knows who unless you ask.
Fostering a Productive Mentor Relationship
- Come with goals and an agenda to indicate to your mentor that you are taking your study seriously.
- Plan with your mentor what you want to achieve in each meeting and set a clear goal that you both discuss so that you are both on the same page.
- Make sure to leave room open for productive banter with your mentor about everyday issues and cultural things to note.
