Introduction and Background of Kinyarwanda

Speakers

Kinyarwanda is spoken by more than 13 million people and is one of the official languages of Rwanda, along with English, French, and Kiswahili.

Prevalence

A 2022 census found that 99.7% of the Rwandan population speaks Kinyarwanda. Most local media, advertisements, early learning materials, day to day communication, and even government administration is produced in Kinyarwanda.

Region

Beyond Rwanda, it is spoken in regions of neighboring countries including Burundi, Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Tanzania.

Related languages

Kinyarwanda is mostly considered mutually intelligible with Kirundi, the national language of Burundi, and has similarities to other Bantu languages
